Situation

Missouri Route 66 draws travelers from around the world—road trippers, history lovers, and nostalgic explorers following the iconic “Mother Road.”

While destinations like Boots Court Motel already served as historic landmarks, there was an opportunity to enhance the visitor experience beyond simply stopping and passing through.

Visitors lacked a distinct, interactive moment—something that invited them to pause, take photos, and share their journey in a way that extended the story of Route 66.

To celebrate the upcoming centennial, the Missouri Route 66 Centennial Commissionlaunched a statewide initiative:
a grant program to install 11 large-scale, interactive landmarks along the route.

Your-Type LLC partnered in bringing this vision to life—starting with a signature installation in Carthage.

Solution

Together, we designed and fabricated a 12-foot custom 3D interactive Route 66 shield, inspired by the iconic highway emblem.

The installation featured:

  • A full-scale replica of the Route 66 shield

  • Cut-out openings within the “66” numerals, allowing visitors to step in and become part of the sign

  • A bold, high-contrast design visible from the roadway

  • Durable construction for long-term outdoor use

The goals were clear:

  • Create an iconic roadside photo opportunity

  • Encourage visitor interaction and social sharing

  • Enhance an existing historic landmark (Boots Court Motel)

  • Contribute to a cohesive statewide tourism initiative

No staffing. No programming.
